The request arrived on a Tuesday afternoon in November, which is to say it arrived at the worst possible time.

Not because November was difficult—all months were roughly equivalent in their difficulty for Dr. Elias Vane—but because Tuesdays were his grading days. He had thirty-seven undergraduate essays on the development of Aramaic script traditions stacked in two piles on his desk. He had not yet found the energy to begin the first one. To a man who had spent his life deciphering the meticulous work of ancient scribes, the wandering, imprecise handwriting of twenty-year-olds was a form of minor psychological torture.

He had, however, found the energy to make a second cup of coffee. The machine in the faculty lounge of the Walsh Building was an older model that produced a thin, bitter liquid that tasted vaguely of industrial cleaning products, but it was hot. That was its primary virtue. Elias knew Christine slightly and respected her considerably. She was precise, no-nonsense, and possessed an institutional memory that made her more valuable to the Mall than half its directors. If she was reaching out directly, it wasn’t for a social call or a request for a syllabus.

“Elias,” the email began. “I hope the semester is treating you well. Something has surfaced that requires your specific eye. It came in late last night through unofficial channels.”

The details followed with the clinical brevity of an intelligence briefing. A limestone fragment had been recovered from a cave system in the Jordanian highlands, approximately twenty kilometers north of the Dead Sea. It had been found by a Bedouin teenager searching for a lost goat—the classic, almost clichéd origin story of half the significant finds in the Levant. Provisional dating based on stratigraphic context and associated pottery sherds suggested the first century BCE.
