The Tesla Connection

On the night of 7 January 1943, Nikola Tesla died alone in a New York hotel room. Within four hours, FBI agents were cataloguing his possessions. They took the research papers, the laboratory equipment, the personal correspondence, the financial records — even notes from experiments run in the 1890s. The government then said the material was of no value. It classified it anyway.

The man assigned to evaluate the papers was Dr. John G. Trump, an MIT electrical engineer and the uncle of a future President of the United States. Decades later, a company bearing Tesla’s name would upend the automobile industry, and its founder would build reusable rockets that the aerospace establishment had called impossible.
