The Cryptid Files

Over three years of Freedom of Information Act requests, Steven Knight pulled more than two thousand incident reports out of the U.S. National Park Service, plus Project Blue Book case files, Edwards Air Force Base security logs, CIA memoranda and NSA intercepts of Soviet research. Governments have been quietly collecting reports of unknown animals for the better part of a century while telling the public there was nothing to collect. Those files open this investigation.

What follows is a global survey held to a documentary standard. The Patterson–Gimlin film and Grover Krantz’s frame analysis. A thousand footprint casts and what Jeff Meldrum found in the mid-tarsal break. Melba Ketchum’s contested DNA paper. Loch Ness sonar returns, Champ, Ogopogo, the Mokele-mbembe expeditions, Mothman at Point Pleasant, the Yeti in the Himalaya, the Yowie, the Orang Pendek, the Chupacabra and the mange-ridden coyotes so often mistaken for it. Each case gets its evidence, its mundane explanation, and an honest verdict on which one holds.

Knight gives equal weight to the hoaxes — the ones that were exposed and the ones that still circulate — to misidentification, to confirmation bias, and to what happens to a witness account once cryptid tourism attaches a dollar figure to it. Fifteen chapters in, some creatures survive the scrutiny with genuinely unexplained evidence behind them. Most do not. The book says clearly which is which.

Throughout, 53 original illustrations by Natalie Knight render each creature in the style of a Victorian naturalist’s field plate — drawn from the eyewitness descriptions on the record.
