Hollow Moon
by Steven Knight · eBook edition, direct from the author
“The Moon rang like a bell for three hours. Fifty years later, no one has explained why.”
On 20 November 1969, the Apollo 12 crew sent their spent lunar module ascent stage crashing into the Moon while the seismometer they had just deployed listened. What came back was not the dull thud a solid body should produce. The Moon reverberated for close to an hour, and later impacts set it ringing for more than three. NASA scientists said, on the record, that the Moon rang like a bell. Then the question of why was quietly filed away.
Steven Knight follows that filing. The seismic record from the ALSEP packages, the density figure that is far too low for a solid rocky body of the Moon’s size, the eclipse geometry that lines up with improbable precision, the rocks dated older than the body they were taken from, the magnetized crust with no dynamo to have magnetized it — each anomaly is laid out with its measurements, its official explanation, and the point at which that explanation stops working.
From there the investigation reaches the hypothesis itself: the 1970 Vasin and Shcherbakov paper in Sputnik, Asimov’s uneasy arithmetic, the far-side photographs, the astronaut testimony, Gary McKinnon and the files he says he saw. This is a documentary investigation, which means it separates what is measured from what is claimed and refuses to blur the line. What is left at the end is a short list of facts that remain genuinely unexplained — and one very old question about the object in our sky.

About the author
Steven Knight spent twenty-two years as an intelligence analyst before turning to writing full time. His work is built on the same discipline he used professionally: follow the documents, weigh the sourcing, and say plainly where the record runs out. Hollow Moon is part of the Knight Chronicles documentary investigations.
